Colorful coasters

The coasters set is very fun to make and works up rather quickly. It makes a really nice item to have in your home, as well as it can be a great and unique gift to make.

Pattern

You will need:

  • Cotton yarn - multiple colors
  • Hook: 3mm
  • Needle: for sewing

Abbreviations:

  • ch - chain
  • dc - double crochet
  • inc - increase (two double crochets in the same stitch)
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • (..) - represents the sequence that will repeat
  • x and number - the number of times to repeat a sequence
  • [..] - the number between square brackets is the number of loops at the end of row

Notes:

You can use a different hook size, as well as a different number of rows or colors. The finished coaster size should be 10cm (4 in) in diameter.

The pattern is written in US terminology.

Make two of the following:

Row 1: With the first color, make a magic circle, ch 3 (counts as first dc), then continue with another 13 dc in the magic circle. Join last dc with sl st to 3rd ch of the first dc attaching the next color. [14] Coasters circles, row 1

Row 2: ch 3, (2dc in the same stitch) x13, 1 dc in the same stitch as first stitch. Join last dc with sl st to 3rd ch of the first dc attaching the next color. [28] Coasters circles, row 2

Row 3: ch 3, (1dc in the first stitch, 2dc in the second stitch) x13, 1 dc in the same stitch as the first stitch. Join last dc with sl st to 3rd ch of the first dc attaching the next color. [42] Coasters circles, row 3

Row 4: ch 3, (1dc in the first stitch, 1dc in the second stitch, 2dc in the third stitch) x13, 1 dc in the same stitch as the first stitch. Join last dc with sl st to 3rd ch of the first dc attaching the next color. [56]
Attach jade color on the next stitch with a sc.

Row 5: ch 3, (1dc in the first stitch, 1dc in the second stitch, 1dc in the third stitch, 2dc in the fourth stitch) x13, 1 dc in the same stitch as the first stitch. Join last dc with sl st to 3rd ch of the first dc. [70]
Cut the yarn and weave in ends.

When you are at the last dc, cut the yarn and pull it out the last loop. Then, insert the tail on a needle. Insert the needle through the third chain of the first dc, and then insert back at the last dc, on the top “v” of the loop.

Crochet lines between rows, on top:

Using the last color, crochet over the top of the stitches for each row of the coaster. Insert hook in the first stitch of the first row, pull up the yarn to make a loop and go on until the circle is completed. I like to use a thinner yarn for this part. Coasters circles, sl sts

Cut the yarn and pull it out the last loop. Insert needle on the yarn.

Do this for all the rows.

If the coaster is not flat at this point you can also fix it: soak the coaster in warm water. Then, you can use a towel to squeeze the extra water from it and also to flatten it. Then, just leave it to dry overnight.

Sewing the two sides together:

Take a piece of yarn and attach the needle to it..

For this part, I like to use the same color as the last row made and also I like it to be a bit thinner than the yarn used when making the rows. I believe it works ok with the same size also.

Take one piece of the coaster and insert the needle under the back loop of the first stitch (“v”). Coasters circles, sew

Take the other side of the coaster and place it near the first one, having the right sides (front sides) on the exterior.

Insert needle under the back loop of the first “v”, for the other piece of the coaster. Coasters circles, sew

Continue to insert the needle under the back loop of each stitch, matching the sides by each loop..
